Description
Rhubarb – Heirloom Seeds / Rare seeds
Rhubarb leaves are toxic and should be removed at the base of the leaves.
Sowing: March-April or at the end of summer – September
Harvest: the second year, May to September
Sowing: in a small terrine (15/20° night and day) in potting soil sowing, cover your seeds with 1 cm, tamp lightly and keep moist. Prick out your seedlings when they are 5 cm tall, in pots with potting soil 1/3 manure or compost. Set up in its final location the following year (a corner of its own, because it will produce for many years, on well-drained soil or on a raised bed). Transplant it in the spring in holes spaced 1 m apart where you have spread manure or decomposed compost. Rhubarb likes moist, deep soil and non-scorching sun, and requires good watering as the petioles sprout. At the start of vegetation, do not harvest stems before the 2nd year and as soon as the flower stalk appears, cut it, because it exhausts the plant. Each year, in late fall or early spring, add a layer of manure or compost around the base of the plants. You can mulch to keep the soil moist and space out weeding. Divide the plants after 5 or 6 years, in March-April, establish these new plants in another place in the garden. Protect rhubarb from slug attacks.
