Lovage, also called mountain ache or perpetual celery, is a hardy and perennial plant native to southern Europe. We speak of a hardy plant when they have the ability to adapt to all soils, are resistant to drought and extreme cold, lovage resists down to -30°C. Especially as an aromatic plant, it is the ancestor of all the celery we know. With a very pronounced flavor, the fresh or dried leaves are eaten to flavor dishes and soups, the seeds have the same properties as the leaves and if you grind its roots, you get a substitute for pepper.</ strong>

Lovage – Heirloom Seeds / Rare seeds

Sowing: February to May

Harvest: July to November

The easiest way is to make a direct seeding, although care must be taken to keep it moist until emergence. From April, dig a not too deep furrow, drop your lovage seeds, cover them with a little soil. Water gently, thin out and leave only one plant every meter. Remember that it is a perennial plant, which over time can reach more than a meter in height and almost as wide. For the semi pot, from March to May, in greenhouses or frames , place 3 or 4 seeds in a bucket filled with seed compost, cover and tamp it lightly, water and keep moist until emergence. Keep only one plant per pot. The final planting in the garden is done when your plant has developed several leaves. Lovage prefers light soils rich in humus, but it adapts easily to all types of soil. Choose a sunny or semi-shaded location, preferably sheltered from the wind. Once in place, lovage requires very little watering, remember to mulch at the foot to maintain the humidity. You can sow under cover in the fall, the seedlings obtained will be planted the following spring. Lovage can be planted all year round outside of frost periods, but preferably in the spring. You can also propagate it by stump division. Curiosity: Between 1850 and 1900, lovage was nicknamed in some regions “Herb to Maggi” so much its taste is similar to this famous Swiss condiment.
