Direct sowing, Maize n do not like transplanting, favor direct sowing to facilitate its cultivation. This plant of semi-tropical origin likes hot land, wait for fine weather to sow it. Tip: let your corn soak 3-4 hours in water before sowing, you will save some days on seedling emergence. Sowing April, May depending on your region, in a furrow every 25 cm, sow in pockets 2 or 3 seeds between 3 and 6 cm deep, in staggered rows or in a superimposed row, leave 50 to 60 cm of spacing, thin out when the seedlings appear, keep only one plant per foot (the most beautiful). Corn likes soil rich in organic matter. Watering, during sowing, must be abundant if you have not soaked your seeds beforehand, keep the soil moist until emergence. Take advantage when hoeing, if necessary, mound your corn feet to strengthen its hold on the ground. You can grow your corn with a squash, this association allows the squash to protect the soil from the sun’s rays and keep the soil cool, don’t forget to mulch at the feet of your corn and squash. If you decide to start your corn planting in pots, choose pots deep enough to facilitate root development. Corn is not demanding in terms of watering, be more generous when forming cobs to promote their development. When to harvest? The harvest of popcorn corn and classic corn is normally done in late autumn just after the first frosts , your corn stalks have dried it’s time to harvest them. Knowing that cobs need 100 to 120 days to mature, you can also therefore start picking them. If during a hot summer your decorative ears are attacked by moths, put them in a plastic bag in the freezer for a week.
