Local variety from the Centre-Val de Loire region

This local variety from the Orléans region hardy and vigorous has many leaves arranged in a rosette around a full, curly heart that bleaches easily. Raw, in salads, its slight bitterness makes it possible, for example, to spice up more bland salads. It can also be eaten steamed or braised. Early variety that can be grown over a long period. We participate in its safeguarding and reproduction by uniting our efforts with those of the URGC (Union of Genetic Resources of the Center Region), the purpose of which is to save vegetable varieties and old endangered animal breeds.

Description

Curly Olivet Chicory – Heirloom Seeds / Rare seeds

Sowing: March to July

Harvest: July to December

Sowing is done between 10 and 20° in a terrine from March to July. The seeds do not buried are covered with a thin layer of compost. Tamp down, water with a fine rain, keep moist. First transplant when the plants have 2 true leaves (plus the cotyledons) in pots with seed compost. Harden them in the open air little by little, before the final planting. Plant your chicory in the ground when they have reached about 5 cm in height, every 25 to 30 cm. Water regularly to prevent the leaves from becoming hard and bitter, mulch in case of drought. Its rosette-shaped heart will whiten naturally without having to put it under a bell jar . Harvest: from July to December, cut your chicory with a knife at ground level and remove the peripheral leaves. This fall salad holds up well to the first cold spells. Type of soil: Does not require any particular soil, but prefers smoky, fine soil. Enemies: snails and slugs
