Chicory Escarole Golden Helmet – Heirloom Seeds / Rare seeds

Sowing: March to July

Harvest: July to frost

Sowing is done between 10 and 20° in a terrine from June to July. Buried seeds are covered with a thin layer of soil. Tamp down, water with a fine rain, keep moist. First transplant when the plants have 2 true leaves (plus the cotyledons) in pots with seed compost. Harden them in the open air little by little, before final planting. Plant your chicory in the ground when they have reached about 5 cm in height, every 25 to 30 cm. Sow in the ground, in June or July. Dig barely marked furrows, sow the chicory seeds evenly. Rake with a light hand to cover the furrow. Tamp down with the back of the rake and water in a fine rain. Keep well moist, at a temperature of 18 to 20°C, until the leaves appear. 10 to 15 days later, when the plants are 5 or 6 cm high, remove the weaker to keep only one plant every 25 to 30 cm. Water regularly to prevent the leaves from becoming hard and bitter and remember to mulch in case of drought. Its rosette-shaped heart will whiten naturally without having to put it under a bell jar. Harvest: When the heart leaves have turned white, cut your escarole with a knife at ground level and remove the peripheral leaves. This autumn salad resists the first cold weather well. Type of soil: Does not require any particular soil Pests: snails and slugs
