Local variety of the Centre-Val de Loire Region

This very old variety originating from Touraine is little known to the general public, because it is not found in stores. It is a biennial plant, beautiful, vigorous with large purplish ribs full, tender, very broad and very fleshy. Its leaves are semi-spreading, wide and dark green. The ribs are eaten raw or cooked. Celery has many virtues: slightly diuretic, beneficial for the health of muscles and joints, appetizers, digestive. It is rich in vitamin B, trace elements, fiber and coumarins (which stimulate blood circulation). We participate in its preservation and reproduction by uniting our efforts to those of the URGC (Union of Genetic Resources of the Center Region), whose purpose is to save vegetable varieties and ancient endangered animal breeds.

Sowing: February to May

Harvest: May November

Sowing in pots: From March to April. Sow under frame, or greenhouse, warm (temperature above 15°C day and night). Start your sowing in a small terrine in seed compost, cover your seeds with 0.5 cm of compost, pack down and keep moist. Seed germination can take 15-20 days. Then transplant when the seedling celery will have 2 leaves, then a second time, when it will have 4 leaves. The final planting is done from mid-May. Cut off the ends of the leaves beforehand (dressing). Respect a minimum distance of 30 cm between the plants. You can also sow it directly in the ground : in line in a furrow or on the fly, cover lightly with soil and tamp down with the back of the rake. Thin the plants to keep only one every 30/40 cm, as soon as they have 3 or 4 leaves, keep the most beautiful ones. Tip: transplant uprooted plants when thinning. In addition to loving water, celery likes soil rich and humus. Planting can be done until the end of June. Harvest your celery from July to November, cut the stalks around the edges as needed. How to store celery: To keep celery fresh for several days, soak the base of the stalks in cold water salty. You will store it in the refrigerator, wrapping the stems in a clean, damp cloth otherwise it will wilt. Store celery away from light and humidity. Celery can be frozen. Just wash it and cut it into sections before placing it in freezer bags.
