Organic Cereals – Oats (whole) from Switzerland
La storia
Originally oats were a plant of the Mediterranean region, but it has adapted in the coastal regions of Western Europe but also in the low-lying, humid and cooler mountains.
Oats (Avena Sativa) come (official science) directly from wild oats. Our cultivated oats have spread from the Black Sea to Eastern and Northern Europe. The first discoveries of oats grown in Europe come from Moldavia around 5600-5400 BC.C. In Roman times, oats became more widespread. In the Middle Ages, a variety ( Avena nuda ) arrived from China. For centuries, the cultivation of oats has been closely linked to the breeding of horses. Oats were more cultivated in Europe in the late Middle Ages.
Unlike hardy oats, the grain of cultivated oats can be separated from the tares. Oats are tender and must be beaten very gently so that its ability to germinate is not lost.
Botanica
Like rice, millet and corn, oats form a panicle. In hardy oats, the flowers are in small groups (spikes) of 2-3 flowers, in cultivated oats from 5 to 7, which are attached to very thin and flexible twigs. The number of flowers per spikelet is greater in the case of cultivated oats, as are grains per spikelet. The size of the seeds decreases towards the tip of the spikelet. Oat grain is usually hairy, soft and easily broken. Oats mainly experience self-pollination. Because autopollinators have smaller anthers, they produce much less pollen than cross-pollinators.
Alimentazione
In recent years, interest in oats as a health-promoting food has increased. Numerous studies have shown that a particular fiber in oats – beta-glucan – has properties that regulate blood sugar and also cholesterol levels. Oats are widely used in India for their therapeutic qualities in Ayurvedic medicine. Oat vegetable oil is recommended for delicate and fragile skin: this cereal is hidden in antioxidants, has anti-aging virtues.
Oat proteins, rich in tryptophan, participate in the production of serotonin and melatonin in humans. Lipids have a high level of galactolipids, which could have a beneficial effect on our nervous system. Finally, oats contain many antioxidants such as avenanthramides, tocopherols and tocotrienols.
For intestinal problems: oat bran is a solution to constipation problems. Oat bran is also an element of a recent slimming diet, the Dukan diet.
Oats are a major protein source along with globulin. It contains 5 to 10% of amino acids including prolamins including avenin, proline, glutamine. One of the minor proteins in prolamin is avenin. The avenin found in GMO crops is toxic in individuals sensitive to this protein, and is believed to cause toxic effects similar to gluten intolerance. The protein source of oats is qualitatively equivalent to that of non-GMO and organically grown soybeans. Research from the World Health Organization (WHO) has shown equivalence with proteins in meat, milk and eggs. The protein contained in the seed husk is in proportion to 12 to 24%, one of the highest levels in the cereal family.
Directions for use
We advise to facilitate the absorption of the active ingredients either to soak 30 Min. oats, or to ferment or cook (soften). We recommend not heating them with a microwave oven to avoid the loss of nutritional quality and its amino acid intake.
